Kohl Flasks. Dimensions: 2 x 3/4 in. (5.1 x 1.9 cm). Date: probably 10th-12th century.
These charming objects were designed to hold kohl, a black cosmetic powder applied around the eyes. In the past, kohl was widely used by men and children as well as women. It was thought not only to accentuate the beauty of the eyes, but also to guard against the glaring sun, ward off evil, and discourage eye disease. The narrow drill hole at the top of these flasks would have accommodated a slender stick to collect the cosmetic.

Lush and sensual, ukiyo-e paintings of the eighteenth century idealized beauty, placing courtesans and young women in indoor and outdoor seasonal settings. Shunsho--an Edo bon vivant, painter, and print designer-was renowned for his facility in depicting actors and beautiful women. This early summer picture depicts a young woman from a good family standing under a willow tree. The poem at the top, composed and inscribed by Fudo, a kyoka (satirical poem) poet, reads:
The willows would leaf in profusion in

peter paul rubens. Venus and Adonis. Artist: Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, Siegen 1577-1640 Antwerp). Dimensions: With added strips, 77 3/4 x 95 5/8 in. (197.5 x 242.9 cm). Date: probably mid-1630s.
The subject is from Ovid's Metamorphoses (completed 8 A.D). Accidently pricked by one of Cupid's arrows, Venus fell in love with the handsome hunter Adonis. Rubens shows their leave-taking--a Renaissance embellishment famously depicted by Titian (see his canvas in Gallery 607). With manly indifference to the goddess's charms and her warnings of danger, Adonis hunted a wild boar and was gored to death. Except for its conclusion, the story was well suited to decorate grand country houses, where the chase occupied noblemen indoors and out.

Francisco de Goya (1746-1828). This is Bad, plate 46 from The Disasters of War. Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes; Spanish, 1746-1828. Date: 1812-1815. Julia Margaret Cameron. The Mountain Nymph Sweet Liberty. Artist: Julia Margaret Cameron (British (born India), Calcutta 1815-1879 Kalutara, Ceylon). Dimensions: 36.1 x 28.6 cm (14 3/16 x 11 1/4 in. ). Date: 1866.
In Cameron's Mountain Nymph, Sweet Liberty, Miss Keene, an arresting model about whom we know nothing but her last name, stares directly at the camera (and, by extension, at the viewer), her hair loose and her eyes open wide. Filling the frame, she seems to step out of the picture. The photograph takes its title from John Milton's poem L'Allegro, a celebration of life's pleasures:
Come, and trip it as you go
On the light fantastic toe;
And in thy right hand lead with thee
The mountain nymph, sweet Liberty.
Cameron sent the photograph to her friend, the renowned scientist Sir John Herschel, who wrote back, "That head of the 'Mountain Nymph Sweet liberty' (a little farouche & égarée [timid and distraught] by the way, as if first let loose & half afraid that it was too good to last) is really a most astonishing piece of high relief-She is absolutely alive and thrusting out her head from the paper into the air. This is your own special style." Herschel seized upon the photograph's most striking quality, its startling sense of presence and of psychological connection with the viewer.
