joachim Patinir. The Penitence of Saint Jerome. Artist: Joachim Patinir (Netherlandish, Dinant or Bouvignes, active by 1515-died 1524 Antwerp). Dimensions: Shaped top: central panel, overall, with engaged frame, 46 1/4 x 32 in. (117.5 x 81.3 cm); each wing, overall, with engaged frame, 47 1/2 x 14 in. (120.7 x 35.6 cm). Date: ca. 1512-15.
Acknowledging Patinir's leading role in a new genre, Albrecht Dürer referred to the artist in 1521 as the "good landscape painter." This intact altarpiece was probably a German commission, since its exterior wings show Sebald, patron saint of Nuremberg, and Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child. Following Netherlandish tradition, large-scale sacred figures dominate the foreground of the interior: Saint John baptizing Christ, Saint Jerome, and Saint Anthony the Hermit with the monsters that assailed him. The picture's true subject, however, is the magnificent panoramic landscape, which the viewer is encouraged to travel through visually in the manner of a pilgrimage.

after William Guy Wall. New York from Governor's Island (No. 20 of The Hudson River Portfolio). Artist: after William Guy Wall (Irish, Dublin 1792-after 1864 Ireland (active America)). Dimensions: Image: 14 1/16 x 20 3/16 in. (35.7 x 51.3 cm)
Sheet: 19 x 24 1/2 in. (48.3 x 62.2 cm). Etcher: John Hill (American (born England), London 1770-1850 Clarksville, New York). Publisher: Henry J. Megarey (American, 1818-1845 New York). Series/Portfolio: The Hudson River Portfolio. Date: 1823-24.
From New York Harbor, we here look back toward Manhattan and the mouth of the Hudson. Agg's related text traces the city's history from a Dutch settlement to a center of world trade whose population was estimated at 140,000 in 1824. "Possessing advantages which are scarcely to be surpassed, in its proximity to the ocean, and its facilities of intercourse with the interior by means of that splendid system of internal navigation which has been so successfully carried into effect, its commercial character must rapidly increase; and the time may not be very remote when it will outstrip, in its wealth, population, and credit, the most extensive sea-ports of the old world. In the view which lies before us, the forest of masts, the spires, and forts, combine to impress the mind with a pretty correct idea of the present importance of the city." The print comes from the Hudson River Portfolio, a monument of American printmaking produced through the collaboration of artists, a writer, and publishers. In the summer of 1820, the Irish-born Wall toured and sketched along the Hudson, then painted a series of large watercolors. Prints of equal scale were proposed--to be issued to subscribers in sets of four--and John Rubens Smith hired to work the plates. Almost immediately, Smith was replaced by the skilled London-trained aquatint engraver John Hill, who finished the first four plates, and produced sixteen more by 1825. Over the next decade, the popularity of the Portfolio stimulated new appreciation for American landscape, and prepared the way for the Hudson River School.

Cyanea capillata, Print, The lion's mane jellyfish, also known as the giant jellyfish or the hair jelly, is the largest known species of jellyfish. Its range is confined to cold, boreal waters of the Arctic, northern Atlantic, and northern Pacific Oceans. It is common in the English Channel, Irish Sea, North Sea, and in western Scandinavian waters south to Kattegat and Øresund. It may also drift into the southwestern part of the Baltic Sea (where it cannot breed due to the low salinity). Similar jellyfish which may be the same species are known to inhabit seas near Australia and New Zealand. The largest recorded specimen, found washed up on the shore of Massachusetts Bay in 1870, had a bell with a diameter of 2.3 metres (7 ft 6 in) and tentacles 37 m (120 ft) long. Lion's mane jellyfish have been observed below 42°N latitude for some time in the larger bays of the east coast of the United States.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Under the Wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa oki nami ura), also known as The Great Wave, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei). Artist: Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, Tokyo (Edo) 1760-1849 Tokyo (Edo)). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: 10 1/8 x 14 15/16 in. (25.7 x 37.9 cm). Date: ca. 1830-32.
The breathtaking composition of this woodblock print, said to have inspired Debussy's La Mer (The Sea) and Rilke's Der Berg (The Mountain), ensures its reputation as an icon of world art. Hokusai cleverly played with perspective to make Japan's grandest mountain appear as a small triangular mound within the hollow of the cresting wave. The artist became famous for his landscapes created using a palette of indigo and imported Prussian blue.

Estuaries on the northwestern coast of Madagascar are featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 28 crew member on the International Space Station. Regions where fresh water flowing in rivers and salt water from the seas and oceans mix are called estuaries and they are among the most biologically productive ecosystems on Earth. This photograph highlights two estuaries located along the northwestern coastline of the island of Madagascar. The Mozambique Channel (top) separates Madagascar from the southeastern coast of Africa. Bombetoka Bay (upper left) is fed by the Betsiboka River and is a frequent subject of astronaut photography due to its striking red floodplain sediments. Mahajamba Bay (right) is fed by several rivers including the Mahajamba and Sofia Rivers like the Betsiboka the floodplains of these rivers also contain reddish sediments eroded from their basins upstream. The brackish (mix of fresh and salty water) conditions found in most estuaries host unique plant and animal species adapted to live in such environments. Mangroves in particular are a common plant species found in and around Madagascar estuaries and Bombetoka Bay contains some of the largest remaining stands. Estuaries also host abundant fish and shellfish species -- many of which need access to freshwater for a portion of their life cycles -- and these in turn support local and migratory bird species that prey on them. However human activities such as urban development overfishing and increased sediment loading from erosion of upriver highlands threaten the ecosystem health of the estuaries. In particular the silt deposits in Bombetoka Bay at the mouth of the Betsiboka River have been filling in the bay.
