Das Gebiet von Matera ist seit dem Paläolithikum (10. Jahrtausend v. Chr.) besiedelt und damit eine der ältesten kontinuierlich bewohnten Siedlungen der Welt. 251 v. Chr. gründete der Römer Lucius Caecilius Metellus die Stadt Matera die bis zur Eroberung durch die Langobarden im Jahr 664 n. Chr. eine römische Stadt blieb und Teil des Herzogtums Benevento wurde. Matera war den Machtkämpfen in Süditalien ausgesetzt und kam unter die Herrschaft der byzantinischen Römer der Deutschen und schließlich der Normannen die Matera von 1043 bis zur Übernahme durch die Aragonier im 15. Mit dem Niedergang von Matera wurden die Sassi zu Slums und die entsetzlichen Lebensbedingungen wurden zur Schande Italiens. Ab den 1970er Jahren wurden Familien gewaltsam aus den Sassi vertrieben und in der neuen Stadt Matera untergebracht. Heute hat der Tourismus Matera wiederbelebt und die Sassi wurden modernisiert und werden wieder bewohnt was sie zu den wahrscheinlich am längsten bewohnten Häusern der Welt macht die bis zu 9000 Jahre alt sind.
